I Put Back the Walnuts

When my wife, Jenn, and I were dating, we stopped at the grocery store for some salad ingredients. I scooped up a bag of walnuts near the produce section, and as we made our way around the store I spotted another display offering walnuts for a better price.

“Do you mind waiting here a moment?” I asked her. “I need to put this other bag back in Produce.”

I thought nothing of this action, but my future-wife was floored. In that simple act, she saw integrity. When she shared her observation with me later, her thoughts caused me to reflect on why this is my nature and what it means about me on a deeper level.

When I considered the result of not replacing the item, perhaps leaving the bag on a shelf near the nuts I had chosen instead, I thought of a busy employee having to notice it, collect it, and put it back on the correct display. Some might say, “Well, that’s their job!” and I disagree. While certain employees’ jobs require them to keep the store tidy, their job is not to clean up after me, specifically. I reflexively accepted responsibility because I do not place an expectation on others to take responsibility for circumstances within my control and capability.

This is me ‘in a nut shell’ if you will. I toss out my empty popcorn bucket at the movie theatre instead of leaving it in my seat, I move wayward snails off the sidewalk into the grass to save them from trampling, and I put back the walnuts. I strive to tread lightly in this world, with respect and good intention, so my only traces are sealed by the stamp of care and integrity.

Instances like this one in the store were enough to compel my wife to commit to me, and I hope I leave a similar impression on you. For a Real Estate Agent who chooses integrity every day — one who will be By Your Side and On Your Side — contact me today, Aimee Crosswell, at 226-724-2979.
